### Human Remains Found in Tijuana Search for Missing UABC Ensenada Student

In a recent search effort conducted by the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Investigation and Prosecution of Enforced Disappearances and Disappearances Committed by Individuals, human remains were discovered in Tijuana. The operation was launched in collaboration with various institutions in hopes of uncovering the whereabouts of José Israel Carpio Ortiz. The 20-year-old was a student at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) in Ensenada, missing since August 27, 2024.

The search area extended from a location near the Tijuana-Rosarito highway, with the help of specialized equipment such as drones and soil penetration tools. The search team, including a canine unit, thoroughly scanned the region. In addition to bone fragments, various objects were found, including a mobile phone, a shell casing, and clothing items. Due to the condition of the remains, identification of age or gender was not immediate and will require DNA analysis.

A follow-up incident report was generated, and specialists from Life Crime Investigation, Forensic Services, and the Medical Examiner’s Office were informed to proceed with further procedures. Supporting the effort were the State’s Attorney’s Office, State Investigation Agency personnel, the National Guard, State and National Search Commissions, and family members.

José Israel Carpio Ortiz was last seen driving a gray 2009 Honda Civic without license plates, dressed in light grey jeans, a light blue shirt, a gray woven sweater, black Converse sneakers, and a school backpack. Anyone with information regarding his disappearance is urged to contact the authorities in Ensenada at (646) 152-25-00 ext. 2561, in Tijuana at (664) 683-9643, or through emergency numbers 911 or 089 for anonymous tips.
