Tijuana Prosecutor Escapes Attack

### Tijuana Prosecutor Escapes Armed Attack Narrowly avoiding armed assailants, Prosecutor Cervantes fled in a daring escape in Tijuana, leading to heightened security measures and suspicions of cartel involvement.

### Attempted Attack on Prosecutor in Tijuana

On the early morning of Tuesday, August 27, a public prosecutor assigned to the Narcomenudeo division in Tijuana narrowly escaped an armed attack. The prosecutor, identified by his last name Cervantes, was leaving his home in the Cerro de las Abejas neighborhood to head to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE). As he got into his car on Obrera Street, another vehicle, a station wagon, approached. Two men armed with long guns exited the vehicle and moved toward Cervantes. Acting quickly, Cervantes accelerated his car and fled towards a nearby neighborhood, successfully evading his pursuers.

The armed men briefly chased Cervantes but ultimately lost sight of him amongst the residential areas. Cervantes informed his superior, Juan Carlos Pelayo, the specialized narcomenudeo prosecutor, who immediately ordered the incident to be kept confidential. As a precaution, a security detail was dispatched to Cervantes’ home, guarding it until the night of Wednesday, August 28.

Pelayo decided to transfer Cervantes to another municipality in Baja California to ensure his safety. However, this decision has not been well received by other prosecutors in the division. Many believe the attack was orchestrated by individuals associated with “El Ranchero,” a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. They suspect that the narcomenudeo division may be favoring a rival cartel, which could have motivated the attack on Cervantes. The dissatisfaction among the prosecutors stems from Pelayo’s lack of detailed protective strategies and vague comments about seeking help from unspecified “friends.”
