**New Director to be Appointed for Tijuana’s Municipal Police**
This coming Monday, March 31, the city authorities of Tijuana will officially announce the new director of the Municipal Police, according to the city’s mayor. The announcement was made ahead of an event related to the Welfare Housing Program in Rosarito on Saturday, March 29.
Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz stated, “Starting Monday, we will formally introduce the new Police Director. We’ve decided to make the announcement then so everyone can get to know the new director.” This statement was made before Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the program leader, arrived at the event in Rosarito.
On March 26, it was revealed that Juan Carlos Hernández, who had been serving as the director of Tijuana’s Municipal Police since October 1, 2024, was removed from his post. However, this change, according to the mayor, was not due to any shortcomings on Hernández’s part.
“These decisions aim to maintain balance and continue strengthening our security framework. It’s not a negative issue; rather, it’s about reinforcing the work of the department. Director Hernández has been an outstanding member, delivering excellent performance,” explained Mayor Burgueño Ruiz.
The mayor further informed that Hernández would be reassigned within the police force, although details of his new role were not disclosed. “He will continue serving within the organization, with my full support and trust. He’s an exemplary officer whom I’ve known for years,” added Burgueño.
The adjustment in leadership is thought to be a strategic decision influenced by José Avilés Amezcua, who took the position of head of the Municipal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection on March 10.
