### Drug Testing of Tijuana Officials Yields Positive Results
In a recent initiative by Tijuana’s Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, surprise drug tests were conducted on public officials across various levels. The effort aims to ensure accountability and transparency within governmental operations. Organized by the Directorate of Municipal Medical Services, the testing involved 500 purchased tests, of which 330 were administered. So far, six officials have tested positive for controlled substances.
Teresita de Jesús Balderas Beltrán, head of the department leading this initiative, explained that the tests were conducted without prior notice to prevent officials from potentially detoxifying beforehand. The testing was initially planned to conclude on Tuesday, but there’s a possibility of extending it to Wednesday due to pending participations.
The mandatory tests focus on identifying five key substances and provide instant results. Currently, all six positive results are linked to benzodiazepines, a controlled substance often prescribed for psychiatric conditions. Juan Luis González Burgueño from the Internal Affairs office clarified that a positive result does not inherently indicate misconduct; some results may be due to legitimate medical treatments or medications for weight loss.
Officials who tested positive have been asked to supply medical documents justifying their substance use. Sanctions for failing the test range from a warning to suspension, depending on the circumstances.
Plans for next year include expanding these drug tests to cover all municipal employees and roughly 2,500 police officers.
