Tijuana Migrants Seek Mayor Aid

Migrant associations urge Tijuana’s new mayor to revive vital support programs and enhance shelter security, aiming to bolster aid for displaced individuals in need.

### Migrant Associations Urge New Tijuana Mayor to Revive Support Programs

Tijuana – Migrant advocates are calling on the new municipal administration to bolster support programs and improve security at Tijuana’s shelters. José María García Lara, the director of Movimiento Juventud 2000, highlighted that during the tenure of former mayor Montserrat Caballero, the presence of municipal police at the shelters was removed, which had previously contributed to better security for the displaced inhabitants.

García Lara recalled that some of the more effective programs were eliminated under the previous administration. In particular, the beneficial deployment of police officers who regularly patrolled the shelters was discontinued. Instead, security issues have been managed via telephone, leading advocates to request more direct involvement from Municipal Public Security once again.

Looking ahead, García Lara expressed hope that the new mayor, Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, will reintroduce the proposal that includes assigning municipal officers to resume patrols in migrant shelters. “Another critical point is the support provided at the beginning of the past administration, which included essential items like rice and beans. Unfortunately, these aids have been almost entirely cut off since last year,” he added.

The director urged Mayor Burgueño Ruiz to engage with migrant representatives to understand the community’s needs better and to create new beneficial actions. “It’s crucial to revisit these actions for organizations addressing these needs. Ultimately, we are engaged in humanitarian work and doing a part of what the municipality, state, and federal government should be doing,” García Lara emphasized.
