Tijuana’s Mayor, Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, recently teamed up with federal officials, including Citlalli Hernández Mora, the head of the Women’s Secretariat of the Mexican Government, to officially launch the “Addressing the Causes” National Security Strategy. This initiative focuses on transforming high-risk areas, tagged as “Peace Zones,” through comprehensive violence prevention measures and the implementation of long-term programs and services.

The event took place at the Valle Verde Community Center, where Mayor Burgueño emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to enhance community environments and create better opportunities for the youth. He highlighted the need to communicate with young people, showcasing the path forward leveraging federal public policies put in place by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, in collaboration with state and municipal governments.

Citlalli Hernández noted that this strategy has not only been initiated in Tijuana but also in Tabasco, with plans to expand further across Mexico. She underscored the necessity of addressing crime at its roots, starting this Tuesday, by deploying over 400 governmental personnel in brigades to engage with local residents directly, identify issues, and propose solutions.

Following the inauguration, Mayor Burgueño joined one of these brigades, participating in neighborhood tours around the Community Center. The event was joined by other key figures such as Jesús Ruiz Uribe, Delegate of Welfare Programs in Baja California, Jesús Valencia, the Deputy Secretary of Welfare of the Mexican Government, and Jorge Salazar, Deputy Secretary of Welfare for the Baja California State Government.

As part of this initiative, a “Peace Day” was conducted, featuring multiple support modules offering services like influenza and COVID vaccinations, canine and feline rabies shots, nutritional information by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), and early cancer detection screenings.

In recent reports, Baja California has been spotlighted for its struggle with criminal activity, particularly against women. From January to October, the region recorded 222 homicides of women, with 29 classified as femicides. This troubling trend continues despite existing gender-based violence alerts.

Elsewhere in the city, law enforcement efforts have yielded arrests related to serious offenses, including the high-profile murder case involving a minister and his brother. Additionally, Tijuana authorities have implemented random drug testing among municipal employees, discovering six positive cases.

In a community-driven effort for improvement, local initiatives include responsible pet adoption fairs and public discourse addressing unfulfilled promises by fraudulent financial services. These collective actions symbolize the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and community welfare amid ongoing challenges.
