Tijuana Fog Diverts Flights

“October fog in Tijuana diverts flights, passengers rerouted to Hermosillo. Weather challenges persist, highlighting the call for improved infrastructure at Tijuana Airport.”

Tijuana Flights Diverted Due to Fog

On the night of October 8, 2024, a dense fog over Tijuana caused several inbound flights to be redirected to alternate airports. Among them was Volaris flight Y41008 from Guadalajara, originally scheduled to land in Tijuana at 9:40 p.m. Instead, the flight was rerouted to Hermosillo’s airport. Upon arrival at approximately 10:50 p.m., passengers were informed by the captain that they would need to wait for improved conditions in Tijuana.

By midnight, passengers were asked to disembark as flights would not resume until after 7:30 a.m. the following morning. Numerous other flights, including those from Viva Aerobus, also faced diversions to Hermosillo.

Carlos Salgado de la Peña, director of Tijuana Airport, reported that between the night of October 7 and the early hours of October 8, 63 flights were canceled or delayed due to the weather conditions.

Recent Weather Challenges at Tijuana Airport

The recent weather conditions affecting flights in Tijuana are part of a series of disruptions at the airport. Earlier this year, Tijuana also faced cancellations during a similar fog incident, marking this as a recurring issue during the fog season. This highlights the need for improved infrastructure and technology to better manage flight operations under challenging weather conditions.

Airport authorities are urged to consider enhancements to their systems to prevent future travel disruptions. Passengers are advised to stay updated on flight statuses and to be prepared for potential delays or diversions during this time of year.
