**Air Quality Alert Activated in Tijuana**

On Saturday, October 12, Tijuana woke up to an air quality alert due to an “extraordinary episode of atmospheric contamination.” This alert, issued by state authorities, warns of potential health risks for residents.

The Baja California Environmental and Sustainable Development Authority (SMADS) indicated that Tijuana’s air quality has been labeled with an orange status, signaling poor conditions due to an overabundance of PM 2.5 particles suspended in the air. As a precaution, SMADS advises people with cardiorespiratory illnesses and those over the age of 60 to limit vigorous outdoor activities. Children under 12 and pregnant women are recommended to only engage in moderate outdoor activities, whereas the general public can continue with outdoor activities while remaining aware of the air quality status.

**What are PM 2.5 Particles?**

Dr. Gabriela Muñoz Meléndez, a researcher at the Colegio de la Frontera Norte’s Department of Environment, emphasizes the importance of monitoring six key pollutants: lead, carbon monoxide, ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and total suspended particles, which include PM 10 and PM 2.5. In Tijuana’s case, PM 2.5 particles are the main contributors to air pollution and respiratory issues.

Dr. Muñoz explains that PM 10 particles can coat the alveoli, crystallizing the lungs and reducing respiratory capacity. Meanwhile, PM 2.5 particles are even more dangerous as they can pass through the alveoli into the bloodstream, potentially leading to lung cancer with prolonged exposure.

“These elements have been recognized as dangerous and require regulation due to their high emission levels and health impacts, such as lung cancer,” Dr. Muñoz said. She also noted the importance of having functioning air quality monitoring stations, although many currently do not operate consistently.
