Tijuana Boardwalk Delays Update

Despite Tijuana Boardwalk renovation delays, visitor numbers remain steady. Upper boardwalk dining options continue to attract tourists as construction progresses slowly.

## Delays in Tijuana Boardwalk Renovation Do Not Affect Visitor Numbers

Despite delays in the rehabilitation of the Tijuana Beaches boardwalk, the influx of visitors remains unaffected, particularly in the upper part of the boardwalk where numerous dining options continue to attract tourists. Juan Coronado Ruíz, the director of Tijuana’s Committee of Tourism and Conventions (Cotuco), shared his observations regarding the situation.

“We have a robust gastronomic offering, charming cafes, and people remain very engaged with what Playas has to offer,” said Coronado Ruíz. “Although we wish the construction could be completed sooner so we can celebrate its inauguration, we don’t believe the delays will impact visitor numbers substantially.”

The boardwalk renovation, which includes amenities such as a bicycle parking area, a surf monument, vertical pergola zones, and ramps for easy access, was initially scheduled to be completed by September 30. However, Tijuana’s Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez recently disclosed that only 20% of the work has been finished to date.

The total cost of the project is estimated at over 183 million pesos, as per contracts signed by the municipal government with Crisol Constructora, Damar Infraestructura, and Urbanizadora Roma. The work was halted on September 14 due to a lack of proper signage, boundary delineation, and contingency planning, based on an assessment by Baja California’s Civil Protection Coordination. The project can proceed once these issues have been resolved.

Coronado Ruíz emphasized the importance of thorough quality checks, expressing support for the authorities’ insistence on meeting all necessary requirements. He also highlighted the valuable role civil society plays in ensuring the project’s success.
