Tijuana Beach Cleanup Limited

Join “Save the Beach” at Cañada Azteca for a beach cleanup on September 21st, limited by boardwalk works. Help restore Tijuana’s coastline and foster environmental awareness.

**Beach Cleanup in Tijuana to be Limited Due to Boardwalk Reconstruction**

The planned beach cleanup event in Tijuana will face access restrictions on September 21st due to the ongoing reconstruction of the boardwalk. The community-driven initiative “Save the Beach” will see its 42nd edition with limited access to the sand and surrounding areas because of the heavy machinery involved in the boardwalk’s rehabilitation.

Nereyda Ayala, the coordinator of the “Save the Beach” project, shared that the delegation of Playas de Tijuana has notified them that access will be restricted from Parque México to El Faro, covering a distance of approximately one and a half kilometers. As a result, the beach cleanup will now take place from the area known as Cañada Azteca and head southwards.

Ayala expressed concerns over the rehabilitation project, stating there was inadequate public consultation. Specifically, there is an absence of information regarding the environmental impact study, total project costs, and the timeline for reconstruction.

The cleanup event, which will start at 8 a.m. on the specified day, invites people who wish to contribute to the effort. “The cleanup is family-friendly; participants are welcome to bring their children. Attendees must adhere to safety measures and instructions on how the cleanup will be conducted,” said Ayala. Due to high levels of bacterial contamination caused by untreated sewage spills, participants are advised to wear gloves and masks for their safety, as well as keeping their shoes on.

Ayala remarked on the unfortunate status of Tijuana’s beaches being known nationally and internationally as highly contaminated, mainly due to sewage spills. She expressed the hope that people could someday visit these beaches without the fear of stomach or skin infections.

**Tijuana Paid $55 Million, Boardwalk Works Delayed**

The city of Tijuana has already paid $55 million for the boardwalk reconstruction, but the project has seen delays. Criticism has arisen due to the lack of a comprehensive public consultation as the details of the environmental impact study, project costs, and reconstruction timeline remain undisclosed.

Currently, we’ll follow the progress and updates regarding the ongoing beach cleanup efforts and the reconstruction status of the Tijuana boardwalk.

**Additional Information on Beach and Boardwalk Situation**

Recent news reveals that Tijuana’s boardwalk, a central attraction for both locals and tourists, has been undergoing delayed and controversial reconstruction. As citizens express their frustrations over the lack of transparency in the planning process, it becomes evident that the environmental assessments and financial disclosures have not been properly communicated.

Moreover, Tijuana continues to grapple with significant pollution issues, notably from untreated sewage spills which contribute heavily to the contamination of local beaches. Cleanup efforts like the one organized by “Save the Beach” are essential community responses to these ongoing environmental challenges. These efforts highlight the need for effective waste management solutions and more stringent regulations to prevent further pollution.

As Tijuana works on improving its infrastructure and addressing environmental concerns, the community’s involvement and vigilance remain critical in ensuring a safe and enjoyable coastline for all.
