The city of Tijuana is currently under an alert for poor air quality, as announced by the Secretariat of Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development of Baja California on Friday, September 6, 2024.

According to the air quality monitoring system run by the department, the level of PM2.5 particles has reached a preliminary value of 70 in the La Mesa area, whereas the acceptable level should be around 15. Due to this alarming increase in pollution levels, the department has issued specific recommendations for residents.

People with cardio-respiratory illnesses or those over 60 years old are advised to reduce both moderate and vigorous outdoor physical activities. For children under 12 years and pregnant individuals, it is recommended to limit vigorous outdoor activities while moderate ones can be maintained with caution. The general population is urged to exercise precaution while engaging in outdoor activities.

Given the current level of contamination, it’s probable that the general population might experience adverse effects. Vulnerable groups are at a higher risk of developing respiratory symptoms and a decrease in lung function. Therefore, the Secretariat emphasizes the importance of following these precautionary measures to avoid health risks.

**Severe Air Pollution Hits La Paz and Los Cabos**

In related news, areas of La Paz and Los Cabos have also reported significant air pollution issues. As a direct consequence, health advisories have been issued, urging residents to stay indoors during peak pollution hours. The Secretariat of Health has identified similar PM2.5 particle levels contributing to the hazardous air quality.

On September 1, 2024, the monitoring systems indicated that both La Paz and Los Cabos faced alarming PM2.5 levels exceeding safe thresholds. Public health officials have warned that prolonged exposure to such levels could lead to severe respiratory problems, particularly among individuals with preexisting health conditions, children, and the elderly. The residents have been advised to wear masks when venturing outside and to use air purifiers within their homes to mitigate the risks.

Authorities are working on immediate measures, including stricter emissions regulations for industrial activities and increased green spaces to combat the adverse air quality conditions. Public awareness campaigns are also being intensified to educate citizens about minimizing activities that contribute to air pollution, such as unnecessary burning and excessive vehicular use.

As air quality continues to be a critical health and environmental issue, it is imperative for residents in affected areas to stay informed through official channels and adhere to recommendations from health and environmental authorities.
