Teachers Strike for Unpaid Wages

Tijuana teachers protest unpaid wages, vow to strike at start of school year. Dispute with government escalates amid unresolved pay issues, threatening education system stability.

### Teachers Warn of Strike Over Unpaid Wages

Tijuana – On Monday morning, members of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) staged a protest against the non-payment of wages to interim teachers. They warned that they would not resume classes on August 26, the start of the 2024-25 school year calendar.

Erick Diaz Preciado, the General Secretary of Section 1-40 of the union, reported that there is an outstanding debt owed to 550 interim teachers, with 450 of them being members of his section.

“We fully support all teachers in Baja California who are suffering from a lack of payment. We are experiencing complicated times, and the working groups addressing the interim payment issues have not been fulfilled,” stated Diaz Preciado.

Despite the State Government’s claims that no debts to the teaching profession exist, Diaz Preciado rejected these assertions.

“Our members have communicated to us that we will not start the school year if our colleagues’ payments are not settled,” he said.

He also indicated that there have been numerous delays in payments agreed upon in negotiations with the state government since July 19. Furthermore, some scheduled payments to interim teachers have been made incompletely.
