Surprise Checks at San Ysidro

New border checks from San Ysidro to Tijuana have irked migrants. INM demands Mexican nationals show ID or birth certificate, leading to long delays at the border.

### New Checks Surprise Travelers Crossing from San Ysidro to Tijuana

**Tijuana** – Travelers crossing from San Diego to Tijuana have expressed frustration over new requirements imposed by the National Institute of Migration (INM).

The INM has recently intensified document inspections for those attempting to cross at the San Ysidro border. According to María Aceves, a regular commuter, since last Friday, officials have been demanding the presentation of a National Electoral Identification (INE) card or a birth certificate to prove Mexican nationality.

“The new procedures have caused lengthy delays,” María noted. “It used to be a quick passage, but now we have to wait in line for about an hour.”

The process begins with travelers forming lines where they are asked to show their official Mexican identification. Reports on social media platforms such as Facebook echoed her complaints, showing images of the long lines at the crossing from the U.S. into Mexico.

For foreign visitors, the process includes paying a fee of approximately $20 at a kiosk to enter Mexico. “Foreigners are aware they need to pay the twenty-dollar fee, but those required to show their identification and fail to do so are being sent back,” María added.

Petra Martínez, another regular commuter, shared a slightly different experience, stating that she was only asked to show her visa, which allowed her to continue into Tijuana without any issues. However, she observed that some travelers were being pulled aside for reasons unknown to her.
