### University Students March Against Judicial Reform

On Sunday, September 1, 2024, law students from various universities staged a protest against President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposed Judicial Reform. The demonstration began at the Ángel de la Independencia and continued towards the Senate of the Republic, located in Mexico City’s Historic Center.

The march saw participation from students of several public and private universities, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Ibero-American University, Free School of Law (ELD), Western Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESO), Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), Monterrey Institute of Technology, La Salle University, and the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE).

The students chanted slogans such as “The informed people do not allow reforms,” “We are lawyers, not pawns,” and “Judicial power is a national counterbalance.”

The protest coincides with President López Obrador’s sixth and final Government Report to be held at the capital’s Zócalo.

### Additional Updates: Nationwide Protests Continue Against Judicial Reforms

In related news, protests against the Judicial Reform have been gaining momentum across the nation. Students and professionals alike are voicing strong opposition to the proposed changes, asserting that the reforms threaten judicial independence.

Earlier this week, large gatherings were also reported in major cities such as Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Puebla. The outcry reflects growing concerns among citizens and legal experts about the reform’s potential impact on the country’s legal framework. Prominent legal scholars have argued that the changes could undermine the checks and balances essential for a functioning democracy.

As the debate intensifies, more demonstrations are expected to take place in the coming days, indicating a significant public pushback against the Judicial Reform initiative.
