**Armed Attack Targets Son of Colima Mayor, Leaving One Bodyguard Dead and 14 Injured**
On February 14, 2025, a violent incident in Colima targeted Carlos Ruvalcaba, the son of Esther Gutiérrez Andrade, the mayor of Villa de Álvarez. The attack, which happened in the Burócratas neighborhood during the Women’s Cavalcade event, resulted in the death of a bodyguard and left 14 people injured, including Ruvalcaba. Fortunately, he is reported to be in stable condition.
The State Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the assault involved an armed group targeting Ruvalcaba. Local security forces assigned to him managed to repel the attack, though not without tragedy. Along with those injured, among whom were three minors, all were taken to nearby hospitals for immediate treatment.
Mayor Gutiérrez Andrade expressed her condolences through social media, offering support to the victims and to the family of the deceased bodyguard. Gutiérrez Andrade, who was reelected in 2024 after taking office in 2021, aligned with several political parties, remains a prominent figure in her community.
This event follows another violent incident involving the shooting of Roberto Bravo, Chief of the Charrostaurino Celebrations Institute, who was gravely injured on December 27, 2025, in a restaurant incident and subsequently died in the hospital.
**Increased Security Concerns in Mexican Municipalities**
Recent events in Colima and other areas in Mexico highlight growing security concerns. The armed attack against public officials or their families reflects broader issues of violence affecting various regions in the country.
In light of the attack on Carlos Ruvalcaba, further measures have been called for to ensure the safety of public figures and civilians alike. Local authorities are under pressure to address security needs more effectively, especially during public events that risk turning into dangerous situations.
This trend is not isolated to Colima. Across Mexico, public safety is a rising concern, prompting discussions among citizens and policymakers about strengthening law enforcement and preventative strategies. As these conversations progress, the aim remains to curb violence and protect communities at all levels.
Such incidents underscore the urgent need for comprehensive security policies and cooperation between state and federal authorities to restore public trust and safety.
