Sinaloa to Baja Migration Rises

Amid rising violence in Sinaloa, increased migration to Baja California is expected. José Maria García Lara anticipates a surge similar to previous trends from Guerrero and Michoacán, with most Sinaloans seeking settlement locally.

### Migration from Sinaloa to Baja California Expected to Increase Due to Rising Violence

#### Tijuana, September 17, 2024

An increase in the migration of individuals from Sinaloa to Baja California is anticipated due to escalating violence in Sinaloa, as estimated by José Maria García Lara, the coordinator of the Alianza Migrante de Tijuana.

García Lara mentioned that in the coming weeks, a rise in migration can be expected, similar to trends seen in recent years with people from Guerrero and Michoacán fleeing for comparable reasons. Unlike migrants from other states, who primarily aim to reach the United States, most Sinaloans intend to settle in Baja California.

“We won’t see a significant impact on shelters, as there is already a longstanding Sinaloan community established here. They seek out their friends and family to assist them during these difficult times,” García Lara added.

### Migration Patterns in Context

Historically, violence and insecurity in various Mexican states have driven internal migration. Guerrero and Michoacán have been notable contributors to Baja California’s migrant population, with families escaping drug-related violence and seeking safer environments.

The current situation in Sinaloa marks a continuation of this trend. With strong community networks already in place, new migrants often have support systems that help them integrate into Baja California more smoothly than those looking to move to the United States.
