In a landmark event, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has been officially recognized as the President-elect of Mexico, pledging unwavering dedication and even her life to serve the nation and its people. During a solemn session at the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) on August 15, 2024, Sheinbaum vowed not to let the people down and to invest all her effort, knowledge, heart, and will to serve Mexico.
Expressing her deep commitment, Sheinbaum declared, “I pledge not to let you down and to dedicate my utmost effort, knowledge, heart, and even my life to serve my nation and its people. Long live Mexico!” She assumes presidential duties from October 1, 2024, until September 30, 2030.
During her first speech as President-elect, Sheinbaum emphasized that she would lead the country with honesty and responsibility while respecting the independence of all branches of government. “As the head of the Federal Executive, as the first woman President of Mexico, I will act with honesty, responsibility, and respect for the independence of the powers. Among her top priorities are building peace by addressing root causes and combating impunity, fostering a fraternal Mexico without discrimination, and strengthening the sovereignty and independence of the country.
She also defended the majority that the Morena party and its allies hold in both chambers of Congress. “The electoral norm in the assignment of legislators is clear. I trust that the Judicial Power will respect the Constitution, the laws, and the will of the people,” she affirmed.
TEPJF President Magistrate Mónica Aralí Soto Fregoso highlighted the historical significance of electing Mexico’s first woman President, signifying a tremendous leap forward. Soto Fregoso called for unity and respect for democratic institutions, stressing the urgent need to combat violence, polarization, and hatred. She noted that voter turnout in the June 2, 2024 elections was historically high, reflecting an increasing participation of women in the electoral process.
Soto Fregoso celebrated the historic day, stating, “This act will be recorded in the history books of Mexican democracy. Mexico has shattered the glass ceiling. Your presidency embodies the aspirations of freedom and progress in the rule of law and full equality.”
