Sheinbaum Pledges to Honor Rights

President-elect Sheinbaum vows to uphold constitutional integrity and human rights, promising support for Armed Forces in major projects, combatting discrimination, and fostering prosperity for all Mexicans.

### Sheinbaum Ensures Constitutional Integrity Before Armed Forces

On September 10, 2024, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the President-elect of the Republic, addressed around 21,000 members of the Armed Forces gathered at the Plaza de Maniobras of the Heroic Military College. In her speech, she vowed never to issue orders that would violate constitutional order or human rights.

“Rest assured that we will be an honest and integral government that will make our people proud. You can be certain that, due to our humanist origin and my profound respect for our Armed Forces, I will never issue an order that violates the constitutional order or the human rights of our people,” Sheinbaum Pardo declared.

The President-elect also reaffirmed continued federal support for soldiers and sailors, particularly in “strategic major projects” such as new passenger train lines and ports. “We will strengthen the National Guard as part of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and call upon you to continue supporting the construction of large strategic projects, like passenger trains to the north of the country and new ports,” she emphasized.

Additionally, Sheinbaum Pardo promised to persist in the battle against classism, racism, sexism, and all forms of discrimination, emphasizing her commitment to making Mexico a more prosperous, fair, and equal country.

Highlighting the social origin of the Armed Forces, she noted, “The Armed Forces come from a social revolution. The institutions you are part of originate from popular roots, not from elites. The soldiers, sailors, and the Armed Forces are the people in uniform.”

Sheinbaum also paid tribute to the dedication of the Armed Forces members in service to the nation. “Each of you may have different reasons for being here, but we share the same mission: our love for the greatness of our beautiful country – free, independent, and sovereign,” she insisted.

Outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his gratitude to the secretaries of Defense and Navy, Luis Crescencio Sandoval González and José Rafael Ojeda Durán, respectively. He praised them as his “two arms” within his administration. “I also thank your families for their support and confidence. I reiterate my gratitude to Admiral José Rafael Ojeda Durán, Secretary of the Navy, who accompanied me throughout my government,” he stated.

López Obrador dismissed claims of “militarization” of the country due to assigning new tasks and projects to the Army and Navy, asserting, “They don’t know our history or our Armed Forces.” He highlighted various military-led projects during his tenure, such as the Maya Train, Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), and National Guard barracks.

Reaffirming that the Armed Forces did not infringe on human rights or engage in massacres, López Obrador said, “I am pleased to say that in this government, there were no disappearances or torture by the Mexican State. There were no massacres, no repression of our people. You come from the people, after all.”

The outgoing President also expressed well wishes to the incoming Secretaries of Defense and Navy, General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo and Admiral Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, commending the new leadership choices by President-elect Sheinbaum.

In related news, the President-elect has outlined ambitious plans for Mexico’s strategic infrastructure development. The focus on expanding passenger trains and port facilities is part of a broader initiative to modernize the country’s transportation network and stimulate economic growth in northern regions.

Several new passenger train lines are set to link major cities, improving connectivity and reducing travel times. These projects are expected to bolster regional economies and create numerous jobs during both the construction phase and operational stages.

Moreover, new port developments will enhance Mexico’s capacity for international trade, facilitating better access for exports and imports. This infrastructure overhaul aims to position Mexico as a more competitive player in the global market.

Sheinbaum’s administration is poised to leverage the expertise and discipline of the Armed Forces to ensure that these large-scale projects are completed efficiently and effectively, adhering to high standards of integrity and transparency.

By investing in transport and trade infrastructure, the incoming government seeks to drive sustainable growth and uplift the quality of life for Mexican citizens, ensuring that the benefits are felt across all socioeconomic strata.
