### EPN and FCH Congratulate Sheinbaum; “Calderón’s War on Drugs Will Not Return” She Says

Both Enrique Peña Nieto and Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, who served as presidents from December 1, 2012, to November 30, 2018, and from December 1, 2006, to November 30, 2012, respectively, have extended their congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on her inauguration as President of Mexico on October 1, 2024.

“I wish the best success to Dr. @Claudiashein, the first Constitutional President of the United Mexican States, in the high responsibility she assumes today in favor of Mexico,” wrote the former PRI member and ex-governor of the State of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, on his social media account.

Peña Nieto, who had been largely absent from social media since July 9, when he expressed condolences following the death of former president Luis Echeverría Álvarez, resurfaced to commend Sheinbaum’s new position.

Similarly, Felipe Calderón Hinojosa conveyed on social media, “Today, as President @Claudiashein takes office, I sincerely wish her well. May she be an authentic head of state, governing for everyone and beginning a period of reconciliation, reconstruction of institutions, respect for the environment, and strengthening a democratic and law-abiding state in Mexico.”

In her inaugural speech, Sheinbaum declared that her administration would not revive Calderón’s “war on drugs,” which she accused of causing significant harm to the country. Instead, she outlined four key objectives of her security plan, focusing on “security with justice.”

“In terms of security, we will ensure a reduction in high-impact crimes. The irresponsible war on drugs initiated by Calderón, which only harmed Mexico, will not return,” Sheinbaum emphasized.

She further elaborated on her strategy, which includes addressing root causes, providing opportunities for Mexican youth, reinforcing intelligence and investigation efforts, and bolstering the National Guard. She clarified that the transfer of the National Guard to the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) would not result in its militarization.

Her plan emphasizes coordination with municipalities, states, public ministries, and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), even while respecting its autonomy. Additionally, she stressed addressing root causes and enforcing zero tolerance for impunity.

#### Sheinbaum Advocates for Judicial Reform, Ensures No Control Over Supreme Court

In her early days as president, Claudia Sheinbaum has justified her administration’s proposed judicial reforms, asserting that these changes will not lead to governmental control over the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).

Speaking to various media outlets, Sheinbaum expressed, “The reform seeks to modernize our judicial system and ensure greater transparency. It is not about controlling the judiciary but about making it more efficient and accessible for the public.”

Norma Piña, recently appointed to another influential judicial position, received acknowledgment during Sheinbaum’s discourse, suggesting increased collaboration within Mexico’s legal framework.

In her continued communication with citizens, Sheinbaum seeks to build public trust, ensuring that her proposed reforms aim at enhancing the overall functionality of Mexico’s judiciary without undermining its independence.

These developments come amid ongoing discussions about the balance of power between Mexico’s executive and judicial branches, emphasizing the need for reforms that respect the autonomy of the nation’s courts while addressing systemic inefficiencies.
