#### Sheinbaum to Continue Seeking U.S. Information on the Capture of “El Mayo”

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced on October 2, 2024, during her first morning press conference, that Sinaloa is no longer one of the top states for homicides in Mexico. She noted that her administration is closely analyzing the security strategy for the region.

“We had our first security cabinet meeting, and Sinaloa is not among the top five states with the highest number of homicides. Guanajuato remains the state with the highest number, followed by Chihuahua and the State of Mexico,” Sheinbaum said.

Despite this, Sheinbaum did not comment on whether the situation in Sinaloa had improved following the capture of notorious drug lord Ismael Mario Zambada García, alias “El Mayo,” on July 25, 2024, in the United States. His kidnapping in Culiacán by Joaquín Guzmán López, alias “El Güero Moreno,” son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, occurred on the same day.

“We are awaiting a more detailed analysis of the Sinaloa case before making any further comments. However, I can confirm that this past weekend, Sinaloa was not among the states with the highest number of homicides,” Sheinbaum explained.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that her government will continue requesting information from the U.S. regarding the arrests of Guzmán López and Zambada García. Additionally, she emphasized coordination with the Attorney General’s Office and announced that she would maintain the policy of daily security briefings, a strategy initiated by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Regarding her security strategy, Sheinbaum Pardo will present her plan on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The strategy will be based on four main pillars: addressing root causes, strengthening the National Guard, enhancing intelligence and coordination between states and agencies.

She has also requested the presence of a representative from the Attorney General’s Office in security cabinet meetings to improve inter-institutional coordination. This approach had proven effective during her tenure as head of the Government of Mexico City.

The document titled “Security Strategy for the First 100 Days” compiled by the Navy (SEMAR), the National Defense (SEDENA), and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) did not list Sinaloa as a priority territory for the new federal administration.

#### U.S. Moves Forward with Legal Proceedings Against ‘El Mayo’ Zambada

On October 2, 2024, a U.S. federal judge in New York granted the request to expedite a hearing for Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García. This legal development follows his capture in the United States after being kidnapped in Mexico.

The U.S. authorities have been cooperating closely with Mexican counterparts to ensure a thorough judicial process. Zambada García faces numerous charges related to drug trafficking and organized crime, which have severely impacted both the U.S. and Mexico.

The collaboration between the two nations underscores the continued efforts to combat drug cartels. It is expected that this case will further strain and test the cross-border legal and diplomatic relationships, highlighting the importance of transparency and information sharing between the governments involved.

Additionally, experts suggest that this legal proceeding might lead to further extraditions and crackdowns on cartel operations in an effort to dismantle the pervasive drug networks extending beyond both borders.
