### Over 1,000 Seized Weapons Destroyed in Second Military Zone

On Thursday, August 8, a significant event took place at the command center of the Second Military Zone, where more than 1,000 seized weapons were destroyed. These weapons were confiscated as part of various criminal activities.

A total of 1,347 firearms—comprising 386 long guns and 959 short guns—along with 1,333 magazines and 23,611 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, were rendered unusable during the ceremony.

Rafael Vázquez Hernández, Director General of Municipal Police and Traffic in Tijuana, highlighted that the Tijuana Municipal Police seizes more firearms nationally than any other region, primarily due to its border location and the high rate of homicides, most of which involve firearms.

“On average, we confiscate between 110 and 115 weapons per month, 70% of which are short guns and 30% long guns. Most of these are ghost guns, which can be assembled from parts purchased online from the United States,” he mentioned.

Leopoldo López Tizoc, Secretary of Public Security of Baja California, pointed out the significant role of the northern border in the influx of these weapons. “The country with the highest weapon production is just north of ours; naturally, most of the weapons entering our country come from there,” he explained. He added that an additional number of weapons also enter from Europe and Asia.

“Currently, we have about 3,000 weapons still stored in the war material depot here in the Second Military Zone,” he mentioned. He noted that other storage facilities across the country hold additional armaments awaiting destruction after investigations are concluded.

The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Brigadier General José Roberto Montes de Oca, Commander of the Baja California Military Region; Marco Antonio Hernández Chávez, Chief Commissioner and Coordinator of the National Guard in Baja California; David Aguilar Mendoza, Station Chief of the National Intelligence Agency in Baja California; Tijuana’s Regional Prosecutor Rubén Alfredo Maximiliano Ramos Jiménez; as well as military personnel, National Guard members, and various law enforcement agencies.
