Scholarship Boost for Private Schools

To tackle public high school space shortages, Baja California eyes reactivating scholarships for private institutions. Ongoing efforts include resolving teacher strikes and accommodating student influx. Stay updated for more details.

### Reactivation of Scholarships for Private High Schools Anticipated Due to Space Shortages

To address the shortage of spaces in public high schools, the government of Baja California is considering reactivating scholarships for private institutions, as shared by Luis Gilberto Gallego Cortez, head of the State Department of Education. Initially, for the 2024 school year, there were 3,600 students without placement at the secondary education level. The administration has successfully relocated half of these students to other public schools. However, 1,800 students remain without placement.

“We are in negotiations with private schools to achieve a solidarity-based relocation for the students. These discussions are progressing well,” mentioned Gallego Cortez during an event at the 16 de Septiembre primary school, where computer equipment was being distributed.

Previously, in 2015, the state launched the “Everyone to Prepa” program, which offered scholarships to students who could not secure spots in public high schools. This program was discontinued in 2021 under the administration of Jaime Bonilla, transferring students back to public institutions.

Gallego Cortez also highlighted an increase in enrollments across all levels of basic education for this school year, attributing it to Baja California’s role as a receiving state for people on the move. There are now approximately 40,000 children and young people from mobility contexts enrolled in the state education system.

Additionally, the current teacher strike, which is in protest of unpaid salaries, has left 600 classrooms without instructors. The government is actively meeting with union leaders to resolve the situation, promising to expedite all pending payments to the teachers within 2024.

### Additional Commentary on High School Enrollment Struggles

Further investigation into the challenges of high school enrollment in Baja California reveals that more than 100 students from Cobach (College of Bachelors) in Tijuana have abandoned their studies due to similar space issues and other systemic hurdles.

The state’s continuous struggle with accommodating the influx of students is putting pressure on both public and private educational institutions. To mitigate this, there are ongoing efforts to allocate additional resources and collaborate more effectively with private schools to ensure that no student is left without an educational placement.
