In a significant move towards addressing gender-based violence, a new Women’s Justice Center (CEJUM) has been inaugurated in San Quintín. This initiative honors Lucero Rubí Ojeda Huerta, a formidable advocate for women’s voices, who tragically lost her life at the hands of her ex-partner. Despite prior reports of domestic violence lodged with the State’s General Prosecutor’s Office, Lucero’s calls for help went unanswered.

On October 29, 2024, the governor inaugurated the center, located on Juárez Street in the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood, with an investment of 38.5 million pesos. The center aims to combat feminicide and reduce existing violence against women. Upon opening, the center began operations with approximately 100 cases, primarily dealing with family violence complaints.

“As part of the alert recommendations, the creation of this center fulfills a long-overdue commitment to women, ensuring they receive the attention and justice they deserve,” stated the governor. Equipped with various facilities, including a courtroom, productive and empowerment workshops, a prosecutor’s area, consultancies, and more, the center provides comprehensive support to affected women.

Magdalena Bautista, the General Director, highlighted their ongoing support since January 2024, having assisted over 100 women through alternative offices. Lucero’s son, embracing his mother’s legacy, has actively campaigned against gender-based violence, awe-inspiring attendees with his impassioned speech during the inauguration.

The inauguration resonates deeply with Lucero’s mother, María Luisa, reflecting on the family’s torment and unresolved inquiries into the initial violence complaints. Both Lucero’s and her family’s perseverance symbolize a relentless pursuit of justice, aiming to prevent similar tragedies.

**Justice Advances with Multilingual Support in San Quintín**

Complementing the establishment of the Women’s Justice Center, the state’s General Prosecutor’s Office has taken additional steps to enhance access to justice, particularly for indigenous communities. The office has employed translators proficient in dialects like Zapotec, Mixteco, and Triqui, acknowledging the language barriers that hinder many women from reporting violence. This development is part of broader efforts to make legal resources more inclusive and accessible across the expansive San Quintín region.

Personalities such as the state’s prosecutor have underscored the need for this sensitivity towards marginalized groups, strengthening the initiative with mobile units for technological denunciations. The collaboration between various sectors aims to bridge justice gaps and foster a more supportive environment for victims of domestic abuse.
