### Increase in Irregular Border Crossings Compared to 2023 for San Diego Sector

The number of irregular border crossings by the San Diego Sector this fiscal year, which extends from October 1 to September 30, has seen a rise compared to 2023, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Luis Miranda, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communications at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), remarked, “We’ve observed significantly high numbers this year, but reductions can be attributed to the presidential proclamation and our cooperation with counterparts in Mexico.”

In the previous fiscal year, irregular crossings tallied at 362,009 for the San Diego Sector. As of two months before the end of the current fiscal period, that number had already reached 386,452, based on CBP’s data.

“Recent months have shown a noticeable decrease in irregular crossings. In July, there were 15,563 crossings, down from 25,000 in June, 32,000 in May, and 37,000 in April,” Miranda detailed.

Despite the recent reduction, the annual figures remain higher, continuing a trend over the last four fiscal periods. Miranda also highlighted the expansion of the CBP One application throughout Mexico as of August 23, aimed at assisting people in situational mobility.

The application will now be accessible to migrants from states like Chiapas and Tabasco, and DHS is maintaining 1,450 daily appointment slots, with efforts to allocate more slots to individuals who have waited longer.

### Changes in CBP Measures Might Reduce Irregular Migrant Flows: Activist

Recent changes in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) procedures are likely to decrease the flow of irregular migrants, according to local activist observations. The expansion of the CBP One app throughout Mexico is seen as a significant step in managing appointments for border crossings.

DHS’s efforts reflect a continued push to streamline the process for individuals in transit and those seeking entry into the United States. This updated system aims to not only enhance efficiency but also to ensure that those who have been waiting are prioritized.
