### Breathalyzer Checkpoints Coming to Tecate as Part of “Safe December” Initiative

In a bid to enhance public safety during the festive season, the Tecate municipal government has announced the implementation of breathalyzer checkpoints as part of its “Safe December” initiative. This measure aims to curb incidents of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with violators facing a potential fine of 4,342 pesos.

Marina Manuela Calderón Guillén, Director of Citizen Security and Traffic in Tecate, emphasized the initiative’s focus on preventing vehicular accidents to ensure the safety of local residents and visitors. She highlighted the collaboration with various governmental levels to secure public safety and family welfare during the holiday season.

The breathalyzer checkpoints will operate from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., starting Thursday, December 5th. These checkpoints will be strategically rotated across different parts of the city. This enforcement is consistent with municipal traffic regulations, particularly in relation to Article 149, which penalizes open alcohol containers in vehicles with a fine of 3,257 pesos.

In addition, passengers found consuming alcohol inside vehicles will incur a separate fine of 2,172 pesos. Driving under the influence can also result in vehicle impoundment, with offenders required to pay for towing and medical or injury assessment fees.

Tecate’s Mayor Román Cota Muñoz has urged drivers attending Christmas parties and festivities to designate a sober driver, underscoring the utmost importance of protecting lives.
