### San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance to Join 136th Rose Parade with Asia-Themed Float
On January 1, 2025, the streets of Pasadena, California, will come alive with the 136th Rose Parade, an iconic New Year’s Day celebration sponsored by Honda. This year, the theme is “The Best Day of the History,” which seeks to celebrate life and bring joy to viewers worldwide. Among the participants, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) will be making a standout appearance for the fourth year in a row, showcasing a float dedicated to the rich and diverse ecosystems of Asia.
The SDZWA float will beautifully portray the lush landscapes ranging from the sweeping mountains of southwest China to the vibrant bamboo understories of the Himalayas and the tropical forests of Malaysia. The float will emphasize the conservation efforts undertaken by the organization, highlighting key species like pandas and tigers that play vital roles in these ecosystems.
A particular highlight will be the intricate depictions of giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, a male and female pair who made their debut at the San Diego Zoo on August 8, 2023. This date was proclaimed as “California Panda Day” by Governor Gavin Newsom, marking the pandas’ return to the United States after 21 years. “Giant pandas have this remarkable ability to bring people together,” remarked Paul A. Baribault, President and CEO of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “Their symbolic presence in the Rose Parade celebrates the unifying force of nature and conservation.”
Joining the pandas on the float will be other beloved creatures such as red pandas Lucas and Adira, along with Connor, a Malayan tiger. Various exotic plants and flowers will further accentuate the design, reflecting the San Diego Zoo’s reputation as both a leading zoo and a botanical garden.
The SDZWA has a strong track record at the Rose Parade, having won the animation award in 2024 for their float “Celebrating 50 Years of Conservation,” commemorating the anniversary of the Safari Park. This year promises another spectacular showcase that highlights the institution’s dedication to wildlife preservation and environmental education.

### Additional Information: Conservation Efforts and the Role of Zoos
As conservation efforts continue to grow in importance globally, zoos and wildlife alliances like SDZWA play an essential role in educating the public about endangered species and their habitats. The use of platforms such as the Rose Parade allows these organizations to reach a broader audience and inspire community involvement in conservation initiatives.
In recent years, the focus has shifted towards creating immersive environments that mimic the animals’ natural habitats as closely as possible. These advancements not only enhance the well-being of the animals in care but also provide visitors with more engaging and insightful experiences. Events like the Rose Parade become crucial in spreading awareness about the pressing need to protect biodiversity and the unique ecosystems worldwide.
Moreover, with increasing international collaborations, there’s a concerted effort to address issues such as poaching and habitat loss more effectively. With awareness campaigns and education programs, institutions like SDZWA foster a more environmentally conscious population, motivating action and advocacy for the natural world.
