Rosarito Set to Transform with New Desalination Plant
Rosarito is poised for a significant transformation with the upcoming construction of its own desalination plant, as announced by Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. As part of the National Water Plan, this project will see an estimated investment of 12 billion pesos (approximately $648 million USD).
President Sheinbaum confirmed, “Yes, we are going to build it… We will make the desalination plant in Baja California a reality.” Rosarito’s Mayor, Rocío Adame, quickly took to social media to express her excitement, stating, “The desalination plant is happening! This project will be key to improving water supply in South Rosarito and protecting our beaches.”
A Step Towards Sustainability
The plant is classified as a Greenfield project and will boast a production capacity of 2,200 liters per second, promising a sustainable solution for the region’s water needs. Proyectos México most recently reviewed the initiative on March 12, 2025, with backing from Banobras and Fonadin.
In addition to bolstering water infrastructure, Rosarito is making strides in tourism and sustainability. Mayor Adame’s administration is actively pursuing National Tourism Quality Certification, a mark of high standards and environmental responsibility for destinations in Mexico. Paul Corona Rodríguez, president of COTUCO Rosarito, emphasized, “This certification is a comprehensive recognition of quality and sustainability in tourism.”
