Rosarito to Launch Pioneering Desalination Plant: A Boost for Water Supply and Tourism
Rosarito is poised for a significant leap forward with the confirmed construction of a new desalination plant. Announced by Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum during a recent press conference, this ambitious project is part of the National Water Plan and requires an estimated investment of 12 billion pesos ($648 million USD).
“We are committed to making this desalination plant in Baja California a reality,” President Sheinbaum affirmed.
Rosarito’s Mayor, RocÃo Adame, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the project on social media. “The desalination plant is not just an idea anymore; it’s happening! It will play a vital role in enhancing water supply in South Rosarito while also preserving our beautiful beaches,” she noted.
This Greenfield project aims to provide a sustainable water solution, with a production capacity of 2,200 liters per second, securing the region’s water needs for years to come. According to Proyectos México, the latest review of the initiative occurred on March 12, 2025, with financial backing from Banobras and Fonadin.
In addition to improving water infrastructure, Rosarito is advancing in tourism and sustainability. Under Mayor Adame’s leadership, the city is pursuing National Tourism Quality Certification, which underscores high standards and eco-friendly practices across Mexican destinations.
“This certification is a thorough acknowledgment of quality and sustainable practices in tourism,” explained Paul Corona RodrÃguez, president of COTUCO Rosarito.
