Rosarito is on the brink of a significant transformation with the confirmation of its new desalination plant. Announced by Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, the project is a part of the National Water Plan, boasting an investment of 12 billion pesos (approximately $648 million USD). “Yes, we are going to build it… We will make the desalination plant in Baja California a reality,” Sheinbaum asserted during a press conference.

Rosarito’s Mayor, Rocío Adame, expressed her excitement on social media, heralding the development as a major leap forward in securing water supply for South Rosarito and preserving its beaches. The plant is set to produce a substantial 2,200 liters per second, thus ensuring a reliable water source for the region.

This initiative, classified as a Greenfield project, receives support from Banobras and Fonadin. It was last reviewed on March 12, 2025, according to Proyectos México. Beyond water infrastructure, Rosarito is advancing in tourism and sustainability. The city is pursuing the National Tourism Quality Certification, a hallmark of high standards and environmental conscientiousness.

Paul Corona Rodríguez, president of COTUCO Rosarito, explained, “This certification is a comprehensive recognition of quality and sustainability in tourism.” These advancements position Rosarito as a frontrunner in regional development and eco-friendly tourism.
