Rosarito is primed for a transformative upgrade with the confirmation of its own desalination plant, as announced by Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum in a recent press conference. This development is part of the National Water Plan and involves an investment of approximately 12 billion pesos ($648 million USD).

President Sheinbaum assured, “Yes, we are going to build it… We will make the desalination plant in Baja California a reality.” This announcement was met with enthusiasm by Rosarito’s Mayor, Rocío Adame, who expressed her excitement on social media, stating, “The desalination plant is happening! This project will be key to improving water supply in South Rosarito and protecting our beaches.”

**A Push Towards Sustainable Growth**

The planned desalination facility, identified as a Greenfield project, is set to produce 2,200 liters of water per second, promising a reliable water supply for the region. With backing from Proyectos México and financial support from Banobras and Fonadin, the initiative recently underwent another review in mid-March 2025.

In addition to water sustainability, Rosarito is strengthening its focus on tourism and environmental responsibility. Mayor Adame’s administration is working diligently toward achieving the National Tourism Quality Certification, a mark of high standards in quality and eco-friendly practices.

“This certification is a comprehensive recognition of quality and sustainability in tourism,” explained Paul Corona Rodríguez, president of COTUCO Rosarito. With these strategic efforts, Rosarito aims to position itself as a frontrunner in regional development through major infrastructure projects and a commitment to eco-tourism.
