### Rosa Beltrán Awarded Nuevo León Alfonso Reyes Prize 2024

Acclaimed Mexican author Rosa Beltrán has been honored with the Nuevo León Alfonso Reyes Prize 2024. The announcement was made by several sponsoring institutions, including the Government of the State of Nuevo León through the Secretariat of Culture and the Council for Culture and Arts of Nuevo León (CONARTE), the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL), the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), the University of Monterrey (UDEM), and the University of Monterrey (U-ERRE), which is hosting the award this year.

“We are pleased to announce that the recipient of this award is a writer whose work has left an indelible mark on contemporary narrative. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an exceptional ability to explore the complexities of the human condition, taking readers through a literary universe that challenges the boundaries between reality and fiction. Her words have brought to life characters that confront us with our own contradictions. It is no surprise that she is considered one of the most representative voices in Spanish literature,” said Melissa Segura Guerrero, Secretary of Culture of Nuevo León.

The prize aims to recognize writers whose work, due to its literary quality, continues the creative and critical legacy of the great author Alfonso Reyes. It also honors contributions from a humanistic perspective, intellectual commitment, ethical concern, and aesthetic excellence, all of which were hallmarks of Reyes.

Previous recipients of the prize include Margo Glantz (Mexico), Donna J. Haraway (United States), Cristina Rivera Garza (Mexico), and Luisa Valenzuela (Argentina).

Rosa Beltrán, born in Mexico City in 1960, is the author of several novels including “La corte de los ilusos” (1995), “El paraíso que fuimos” (2002), “Alta infidelidad” (2006), “Efectos secundarios” (2011), “El cuerpo expuesto” (2013), and “Radicales libres” (2021). She has also penned short story collections such as “Amores que matan” (1996 and 2019), “Cuentos darwinianos” (2020), and essays like “Verdades virtuales” (2019).

Following the announcement, Rosa Beltrán shared her thoughts: “I wish I could convey the emotion that perhaps screens cannot deliver as directly and effusively. It’s an honor to receive this award from institutions that have been entrusted with the adjudication. Like me, the jurors believe that only through education can we achieve a sense of life worth living.”

The award ceremony for the fifth edition of the Nuevo León Alfonso Reyes Prize will take place on September 27 at the Government Palace in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
