### Confirmed: Two Deaths in Mulegé Due to Rickettsia

Authorities from the Health Department of Baja California Sur (SSABCS) are intensifying efforts to combat and control the incidence of rickettsia cases in the municipality of Mulegé, which remains the primary hotspot for this disease in the state.

Zazil Flores Aldape, head of SSABCS, reported that Mulegé has already seen two fatalities from this infection, which is transmitted through the bite of a tick. Furthermore, the official stated that there are 73 probable cases and 3 confirmed cases so far this year.

Flores Aldape emphasized that it is crucial for people to seek medical evaluation and possible treatment at the first sign of symptoms like fever, even before clinical tests confirm rickettsial infection. This preemptive approach accounts for the 73 probable cases, as treatments have commenced prior to confirmatory diagnostics.

According to SSABCS data, around 30 probable cases were reported during the same period in 2023, indicating a significant rise in the number of patients this year. The disease, transmitted through the bite of an infected tick, has an incubation period of up to 14 days and can present symptoms such as skin rashes, headache, muscle pain, high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea.

In the Vizcaíno community specifically, the authorities have initiated actions due to evident tick infestations. Measures include controlling pet populations through sterilization and deworming programs. Flores Aldape stated, “We have had cases across the state, but in Vizcaíno, we’ve taken very specific actions over the past two years, working with the community and the Department of Public Education.”

Lastly, she urged residents to report any areas with significant tick presence to health authorities and allow Health Department personnel to access homes for preventive measures and necessary fumigation.
