Two young boys, Jesús Alejandro, 13, and Eduardo, 16, tragically drowned in a body of water at Rancho La Herradura on August 6. According to Rafael Carrillo, director of Tijuana Fire Department, the children were visiting a friend and were not residents of the nearby Villa del Campo subdivision where the accident occurred.
The incident was first reported on the afternoon of August 5. Despite beginning the search close to 6 PM that day, rescue efforts had to be halted due to darkness and resumed early on the morning of August 6. The rescue operation started at 9:18 AM, with the first body found at 9:26 AM and the second at 9:32 AM.
It was discovered that the children were playing when one, Jesús Alejandro, lost a sandal in the water. While attempting to retrieve it, he started to drown, and his older brother, Eduardo, jumped in to save him but tragically, neither survived. The area where they drowned was filled with silt and had a steep drop-off, which possibly contributed to the accident, explained Luis Hernández, Captain of the Tijuana Water Rescue Division.
This was the first time the children had visited this location, and they were not aware of the danger, shared Carrillo. He emphasized the importance of parents keeping a close eye on their children, especially around bodies of water to prevent similar tragedies.
