Baja California’s emerging and multicultural band, Ramona, is set to captivate audiences with their unique blend of cumbia, soul, and rock. Their latest album, titled “Himnos del Amor” (Hymns of Love), navigates the complexities of human relationships within a borderland context. The band will debut their new album on August 10th at the iconic Teatro de la Casa de la Cultura in the Altamira neighborhood.

Ramona, known for their bold and disruptive style, continues to tell stories of love, culture, and identity. The album features collaborations with renowned artists such as Ximena Sariñana, Daniel Me Estás Matando, Muelas de Gallo (Banda Bastón), Dulce y Agraz, David Velasco (Porter), and Daniel Dennis.

Luis Reyes (guitar), Omar Córdoba (drums), Eli Ponce (synthesizer), Dalia Esquivel (piano), Edgar Moreno (bass), and Jesús Guerrero (vocals and guitar) make up the group. Their previous albums, “La Segunda Luz del Día” and “Serenata Virtual,” showcased their willingness to experiment, and “Himnos del Amor” is no different. The new album spans 27 tracks, exploring episodes such as “Amor de Lejos”, “Anillo de Matrimonio”, “La Boda”, “Te Vas”, and “Dejar Ir.”

Ramona’s music is infused with various genres, including cumbia, bolero, danzón, and hip-hop, drawing influences from Rigo Tovar, Álvaro Carrillo, Tin-Tán, Ángeles Negros, and Chico Ché. According to Jesús Guerrero, the album tells the story of a Chicano couple’s evolving relationship, marked by cultural exchanges at the border.

“Tijuana and the border influence our work,” said Guerrero. “We incorporate the most representative and significant spaces in the city into our narrative, emphasizing the migrant life while staying connected to our southern roots.”

Following the pandemic, the band had the freedom to create an extensive and artistic album, diverging from their previous eight-song project. They drew inspiration from Juan Rulfo’s book “Cartas a Clara” for the track “Clarita de mi Alma,” infusing themes of death, nostalgia, and love, unafraid to express emotions some might find overly sentimental. Ramona’s multicultural approach blends various genres and references to enrich the story’s setting – a love story evolving in the borderlands.

With over a decade of experience, Ramona has found refuge and artistic projection in the nation’s capital, receiving a warm reception at the Lunario of the National Auditorium in April. They are now gearing up for a U.S. tour starting on August 29 at Casbah in San Diego, followed by performances in Long Beach, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and Austin.

“We aim to promote ‘Himnos del Amor’ without rushing,” Guerrero shared. “We want our audience to fully appreciate, enjoy, and reflect on the album. Videos are also part of the story, and we don’t want to rush them in the fast-paced music platform world.”
