### Secretaría de la Función Pública Investigates PROFECO Head for Sexual Harassment
The Secretariat of Public Administration (SFP) has launched an investigation into David Aguilar Romero, the head of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO), for alleged sexual and workplace harassment. This news was disclosed on August 14, 2024.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador appointed Aguilar Romero as the head of PROFECO on October 4, 2023. He replaced Francisco Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, who left the position to run as a candidate for the Morena party for the governor’s seat in Guanajuato in the June 2, 2024 elections.
The investigation emerged after Giovanna Salem, Aguilar Romero’s former personal secretary, claimed she had been subjected to pressure and harassment by the federal official. Salem submitted evidence, including audio recordings, photographs, and message logs, to support her allegations.
Salem also reported the matter to the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), leading the SFP to open an investigation file. According to reports, Aguilar Romero has been using a portion of PROFECO’s legal team to prepare his defense.
Members of the incoming team for President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum received a detailed report of the harassment allegations. David Aguilar has remained silent on the issue since the complaint was filed in April.
