Political Arrests Upend Reform Vote

Tensions soar as Máynez accuses Layda of MC senator’s father’s arrest; Marko warns Yunes face expulsion. Political turmoil worsens before crucial vote on judicial reform nears.

### Máynez Accuses Layda of Arresting MC Senator’s Father; Marko Threatens Expulsion of Yunes

Jorge Álvarez Máynez, a former presidential candidate from the Citizen’s Movement (MC) party, claimed on September 10, 2024, that the state government of Campeche, under Layda Elena Sansores San Román from Morena, had detained the father of Francisco Daniel Barreda Pavón, an MC senator. This arrest occurred on the same day during the early hours.

Barreda Pavón was the lone opposition senator yet to cast his vote on the Federal Judicial Power reform. On September 5, 2024, Barreda Pavón publicly announced his opposition to the reform, aligning with the opposition bloc that had 43 votes necessary to block the judicial reform. The ruling party coalition (Morena, PVEM, PT) needed one more vote for a qualified majority to pass constitutional amendments.

Máynez further accused the Campeche state government of detaining Paul Alfredo Arce Ontiveros, MC’s parliamentary group coordinator in the local Congress, right after he dropped his children at school.

“[ALERT] In retaliation for this stance, Layda Sansores’ criminal government arrested Senator Daniel Barreda’s father in Campeche last night. They also detained Paul Arce, our coordinator in Campeche, at his children’s school. This is madness. The Judicial Reform discussion must be suspended,” urged Máynez.

Clemente Castañeda Hoeflich, MC’s Senate coordinator, condemned the political intimidation and threats towards Barreda Pavón, holding Governor Sansores responsible for any political persecution.

On the same day, Marko Antonio Cortés Mendoza, president of the National Action Party (PAN), warned PAN senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez and his substitute, Yunes Linares, against absenting from the judicial reform vote. Reports suggested Yunes Márquez might join Morena’s ranks in the Senate, but Cortés Mendoza emphasized party loyalty and threatened expulsion for any PAN member defying the party line.

“We will immediately exclude any panista who abstains or votes in favor of this regressive reform. We cannot play with Mexico’s future, with freedom, with democracy,” Cortés Mendoza stressed.

The apparent silence from Yunes Márquez since the previous Saturday added tension, as PAN anticipated his vote against the reform.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, queried about Yunes Márquez potentially joining Morena, stated he was unaware of such developments.
