On August 26, 2024, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced the appointment of Víctor Rodríguez Padilla as the new Director General of Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX). He succeeds Octavio Romero Oropeza, who had held the position since December 1, 2018, under the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

### Who is Víctor Rodríguez Padilla?

Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, 64, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has also served as a tenured professor for over 38 years at the Faculty of Engineering at UNAM. Rodríguez Padilla is a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI), and he holds a Master’s degree in Energy Engineering from UNAM, as well as a Ph.D. in Energy Economics from Pierre Mendes France University in Grenoble, France.

Throughout his academic career, he has mentored 32 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses and taught 82 courses, all at UNAM. He regularly contributes his expertise to various media outlets, focusing on energy issues.

Rodríguez Padilla has published multiple books and 24 articles in national and international journals, sharing his analyses in outlets like “Energía Hoy” until 2023. His primary research interests include energy and development, energy policy and planning, the organization and regulation of energy industries, as well as hydrocarbon contracts and fiscal regimes.
