Adán Augusto López Hernández, former Secretary of the Interior, and José Gerardo Rodolfo Fernández Noroña, former federal deputy of the Labor Party (PT), have been appointed as the coordinator of the legislative group of Morena and the President of the Board of Directors in the Senate, respectively. This decision, made unanimously by Morena’s elected legislators during a plenary meeting, will take effect starting September 1, 2024.

“It’s a great honor, especially having colleagues with such exceptional political experience and strong track records. It’s a significant honor for me that they unanimously decided I should lead the Senate’s Board of Directors,” said Fernández Noroña after his election.

López Hernández, expressing his respect for Fernández Noroña, acknowledged him as a valuable colleague. “Gerardo is our companion and friend. He has our full respect and affection. He’s a valuable member of our movement,” López Hernández stated after leaving Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s transition house, who is the virtual president-elect of the Republic.

Ricardo Monreal Ávila, President of the Political Coordination Board (JUCOPO) of the Senate, emphasized the necessity of unity within the party. He said, “In this critical juncture of constructing the second phase of the Fourth Transformation, we should avoid internal conflicts or divisions. Our focus should be solely on strengthening our legislative agenda and supporting President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.”

Despite some internal disagreements earlier in June, both López Hernández and Fernández Noroña reaffirmed their commitment to unity. Both politicians were also key contenders within Morena’s internal election for the presidential candidacy, securing 11% and 10% of the vote, respectively.
