Morena Leadership Battle Looms

Alcalde and López Beltrán vie for Morena leadership, sparking internal tensions and criticism of dynastic influences. The upcoming congress holds key decisions for the party’s future.

## Alcalde Luján and AMLO’s Son Vie for Control of Morena; “Patrimonial Party”: Gibrán

As the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador draws to a close, two close allies of the President are positioning themselves to take the reins of Morena, the political party that propelled López Obrador to the presidency in 2018.

Luisa María Alcalde, the current Secretary of the Interior, has received support from several federal legislators to become the next leader of Morena. Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, the vice coordinator of Morena’s deputies, expressed confidence in Alcalde’s ability to strengthen the party.

Simultaneously, Andrés López Beltrán, known as “Andy” and the son of López Obrador, is being considered for the Secretary-General position by some Tabasco state councilors. César Castro Ponce, the President of the State Council, highlighted Beltrán’s involvement in the party’s organizational efforts during the 2018 campaign.

Unlike the comprehensive internal process for party leadership change in 2020, the 2024 renewal will occur in a single session at the VII National Extraordinary Congress on September 22.

The proceedings will involve various party positions, and Luisa María Alcalde has confirmed her intention to seek the presidency of the CEN. Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar stated that Alcalde is currently the only identified candidate for the position.

Gibrán Ramírez Reyes, who previously aspired to the national leadership of Morena, criticized the upcoming renewal process as undemocratic and a power grab by a select few.

At the upcoming congress, a variety of leadership roles within the party will be up for grabs, and discussions will include extending the terms of national and state congress members until 2027. This event promises to be a significant moment for the future direction of Morena and its internal dynamics.
