### New Monkeypox Cases in BCS: 13 Confirmed Including Two More in Los Cabos

The Baja California Sur Health Department (SSABCS) has confirmed two new cases of monkeypox in Cabo San Lucas, increasing the total number of cases in the state over the past two years to 13.

These recent cases involve residents of Los Cabos who had traveled outside the state. So far in 2024, there have been seven new cases of monkeypox (Mpox) in Baja California Sur, with three cases reported in both 2023 and 2022.

The 13 reported cases are distributed among the municipalities as follows: six in La Paz, five in Los Cabos, one in ComondĂș, and one in Loreto. Health authorities noted that all patients have experienced mild symptoms and have been isolating at home, with medical follow-ups from their respective healthcare institutions. No hospitalizations or fatalities due to monkeypox have been reported in the state.

Alfredo Ojeda Garmendia, head of the SSABCS Epidemiology Subdirectory, explained that while the disease has been known for over 50 years, outbreaks have been identified outside of Africa since 2018, including in Mexico, which has reported over four thousand cases.

Monkeypox is a contagious disease caused by a virus. Unlike COVID-19, its transmission rate is much lower, primarily spreading through direct person-to-person contact or through contact with contaminated objects and fluids. The virus can survive on surfaces for extended periods.

Ojeda Garmendia emphasized that the virus’s ability to remain viable in the environment makes direct and fluid contact the most common transmission routes. He urged the public to be aware of these transmission methods and to take necessary precautions.

### Additional Developments on Monkeypox in Mexico

According to further news sources, the recent spike in monkeypox cases is a matter of concern for health authorities across Mexico. The Ministry of Health has urged the public to adhere to safety protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.

Recent reports indicate a similar rise in cases in other parts of the country, with health officials implementing stricter measures in public spaces to mitigate potential outbreaks. The Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to deploy additional resources if necessary.

In an effort to raise awareness, health campaigns are being intensified, focusing on educating the public about the symptoms and prevention methods of monkeypox. These efforts are crucial in managing the spread of the virus and ensuring public health and safety.
