### Baja California Sur Reports Five Cases of Monkeypox in 2024; Investigating Origins

The Health Secretariat of Baja California Sur (SSABCS) has confirmed five cases of monkeypox in the region so far this year, based on clinical results from certified laboratories. The most recent cases include four individuals, in addition to a previously identified patient in Los Cabos on August 28.

The distribution of the four new cases is as follows: two individuals in a rural agricultural area of La Paz, one in Ciudad Insurgentes, and one in Loreto. SSABCS leader, Zazil Flores Aldape, emphasized that these new cases are of the same lineage that has been circulating in the region and the country since 2022, not the variant that led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a state of emergency due to a surge in cases in Africa.

The infected individuals are currently isolating at home and being monitored by healthcare institutions, with no severe cases reported. Ana Luisa Guluarte, director of Health Services at SSABCS, noted that there were three cases each in 2022 and 2023. The cumulative total for Baja California Sur over the past two years is now 11 cases of monkeypox.

The distribution of these 11 cases among municipalities includes 6 in La Paz, 3 in Los Cabos, 1 in Comondú, and 1 in Loreto. Authorities are currently investigating the origin of these infections to control transmission within the region.

Flores Aldape assured the public that monkeypox is a low-lethality disease, though it does carry some risk. She emphasized the importance of precautionary measures already in place at maritime and air ports, as well as public and private schools, and asserted that no additional precautions are needed at this time.

“Airports and ports have their own health surveillance systems to detect incoming patients with a fever, initiating medical reviews from there,” she said. She also praised the SSABCS healthcare staff for their preparedness in diagnosing and treating patients effectively.

The symptoms of monkeypox include fatigue, skin rashes lasting two to three weeks, headaches, muscle aches, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.
