On December 19, 2024, US authorities unveiled the first image of Dámaso López Serrano, better known as “Mini Lic,” following his detention. Accompanying the photograph was the arrest warrant issued by the U.S. Eastern District Court of Virginia, accusing him of fentanyl trafficking.

In the released image, López Serrano, formerly tied to the Sinaloa Cartel, can be seen wearing a dark blue t-shirt and a black hoodie, accessorized with brown-framed glasses. He is currently held in a Virginia state prison.

The arrest warrant specifies that the 37-year-old López Serrano faces charges of conspiracy to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he is registered under number 63436-298 and has been in custody since September 16, 2022.

In light of recent developments concerning Dámaso López Serrano, both the US and Mexican governments have pledged to strengthen their collaborative efforts against the illegal trade of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. The newfound commitment seeks to address the growing threat of fentanyl on both sides of the border, which has led to an alarming increase in overdose deaths.

Government officials from both countries held a summit earlier this month to discuss strategies in combatting the trafficking networks responsible for the distribution of the drug. The meeting outlined new policies and joint task forces aimed at disrupting cartel operations and enhancing investigative techniques.

As a part of these efforts, technology and intelligence sharing between US and Mexican law enforcement agencies are set to expand significantly, gaining insights from ongoing and previous operations to effectively dismantle organized crime groups involved in the narcotics trade.

The increased focus on fentanyl trafficking is part of a broader initiative to curb the opioid crisis afflicting numerous communities in both nations, highlighting the urgent need for international cooperation.
