**Grupo de Danza Minerva Tapia Performs in Mexico City**
After a hiatus of 29 years, the renowned Tijuana-based contemporary dance company, Grupo de Danza Minerva Tapia, will showcase a distinctive dance program at the Teatro de la Danza Guillermina Bravo in Mexico City. This performance is part of the “Northern Contemporary Dance Season” and will run from August 22 to August 25.
Directed and choreographed by Minerva Tapia, the company will present three compelling pieces: “Aura”, “Cuerpitos Fronterizos”, and “Padres”. The troupe includes dancers Alejandra Ramírez, Adrián Villeda, Salma Ruiz, and Dayra Meraz. This marks their debut at the prestigious Teatro de la Danza Guillermina Bravo, located in the Centro Cultural del Bosque and part of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes.
“Cuerpitos Fronterizos”, originally created in 2009, explores the human body through four contemporary experiences specific to the Tijuana-San Diego border. It delves into the body as a means of transport for drugs (known as “mules”), the transformation of bodies via aesthetic surgeries in Tijuana, and the body as both form and object, as well as a subject of abuse. This piece prominently features the poetry of Estela Alicia López Lomas (Esalí).
Another highlight, “Aura”, is inspired by Carlos Fuentes’ novel of the same name and examines the duality in the life of the protagonist Consuelo-Aura, paralleling the cultural duality of the Tijuana-San Diego region. Meanwhile, “Padres” revisits part of the choreography “Juanito/Saint of the Migrants”, based on the legend of Juan Soldado and the tragic story of Olga Camacho.
Minerva Tapia reflected on the company’s history with Mexico City, including their inaugural performance in 1995 at the Centro Nacional de las Artes. She expressed excitement about returning with a talented ensemble she has known and trained over the years.
