Mexico Misses Medal Goal Paris 2024

Ana Gabriela Guevara expressed disappointment as Mexico fell short at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite forecasted expectations, the team secured five medals, showing resilience and potential.

### “We Fell Short”: Ana Gabriela Guevara on Mexico’s Performance in Paris 2024 Olympics

Ana Gabriela Guevara, head of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (Conade), expressed disappointment with the performance of Mexican athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Guevara admitted that the final results did not meet their expectations.

“We fell very short, but there were medals that slipped away along the way. I always said: it is difficult to match the numerical predictions with the realities of competition. Numbers don’t capture the competitive atmosphere or the adrenaline,” she stated.

Guevara had forecasted that Mexico would win nine medals in these games but after the near-miss of Carlos Sansores in taekwondo, who just missed the podium finish, she acknowledged that the expectations were not met. “Competition and numbers are cold and predictive—they give a number and project what could be. We were certain that nine medals were attainable,” she explained.

Mexico secured a total of five medals in Paris: a silver medal by Marco Verde in boxing, two medals by diver Osmar Olvera (a silver in the 3-meter synchronized diving with Juan Celaya, and a bronze in the individual event), a bronze with the women’s archery team, and another silver by Prisca Awiti in women’s -63 kg judo category.

“Many potential medals slipped away – in diving, archery, modern pentathlon, and taekwondo. More than just nine, we could have claimed many more medals, but that’s sports for you. Unfortunately, the expected results didn’t materialize,” Guevara elaborated.

Despite the setback, Guevara expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ efforts. “We would have loved to have more medals. The Olympics grow competitively each edition. The outcome is still positive with many finalists. There is much to reflect on and evaluate for the future,” she concluded.
