Mexican legislator Jaime Cantón Rocha has officially filed a complaint with the Baja California Human Rights Commission. This action follows the recent republication of a controversial letter in a local print publication under a section named “Cartaz.” The letter, titled “Governments Tolerant of LGBTQIA+”, was originally penned by citizen Leopoldo Durán and was included in last Friday’s edition.

Jaime Cantón Rocha has demanded that the publication issue a public apology to the LGBTQIA+ community and their readership. “It’s imperative that we do not normalize hate conduct or discourse,” expressed Cantón. He highlighted the urgency by referring to recent violent incidents, stating, “Just last week, a trans youth named Alexis was shot here in Mexicali, and a community member was murdered in Tijuana.”

The complaint was supported by Altagracia Tamayo, a dedicated activist from Mexicali and a prominent voice representing sexual diversity. Tamayo expressed concern over the potential influence of such rhetoric on young students, stating, “My greatest worry is that these words of hate will reach school students. That’s the worst outcome. These words extend far beyond what is actually intended.”

The complaint has been officially received by Álvaro Ochoa Orduño, the Human Rights Commissioner of Baja California.
