Tijuana, Baja California – Mexican boxer Marco Alonso Verde Álvarez advanced to the final in the 71-kilogram category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with his eyes set on securing a gold medal. Verde, who made his debut in the semi-finals, squared off against Britain’s Lewis Richardson. After a hard-fought match held at the iconic Roland-Garros stadium, Verde emerged victorious by a split decision of 3-2, edging out rounds one and three.
This notable achievement comes 40 years after Mexican boxer Héctor López contended for the gold in the 54-kilogram division during the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, where he ultimately claimed silver.
Verde’s journey to the finals saw him eliminating Tiago Muxanga of Mozambique in the Round of 16 and Nishant Dev of India in the Quarterfinals. This sequence of wins adds another significant milestone to Verde’s career, which includes titles such as the 2023 Central American champion in San Salvador and the 2023 Pan-American champion in Santiago.
The win captured the fourth medal for Mexico at the Paris 2024 Games, following a bronze in women’s archery and two silvers in synchronized diving and judo, thanks to athletes Prisca Awiti, Osmar Olvera, and Juan Manuel Celaya respectively. This victory also marks Mexico’s return to the Olympic boxing podium for the first time since Misael Rodríguez’s bronze in Rio 2016, making it the 14th boxing medal in Mexico’s Olympic history and the 77th overall in all sports disciplines.
Marco Verde is set to compete for the gold medal against Uzbekistan’s Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev this Friday, August 9, at the same prestigious venue.
