Mexicali Security Now Joint Effort

“State and federal forces take control in Mexicali’s Valle Sur after an attack. Enhanced security measures aim to combat violence and protect citizens in collaboration with Sonora.”

### State and Federal Forces Take Control of Security in Valle Sur, Mexicali

In response to a recent attack on state agents, the Governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, has announced that state and federal forces will take charge of maintaining security in the Valle Sur region of Mexicali. The decision, which involves both the State Citizen Security Force (FESC) and the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), aligns with a broader strategy coordinated with the state of Sonora.

Ávila Olmeda explained that this measure follows an ambush last week where two FESC officers were injured while patrolling the Valle Sur area. As a result, local municipal police were sent to the Control and Trust Center (C3) to re-take their assessments after failing to respond to the emergency call.

“This approach is similar to one we saw in Tijuana several years ago. Given the recent violent incidents in Mexicali, it became necessary to reassess our security measures,” the Governor elaborated.

In July, Baja California and Sonora’s governments had agreed to implement a coordinated security strategy, including a unified command in San Luis Río Colorado. This collaboration aims to address the unique security challenges in different regions and respond more effectively to critical incidents.

For now, the Governor has stated that there are no immediate plans to expand this approach to other municipalities. However, she did not entirely rule out the possibility, suggesting that the security situation in each area will dictate future actions. “If the security table determines that a similar operation is needed in another municipality, we will proceed accordingly,” Ávila Olmeda asserted.

### Background on Increased Police Presence

**Additional Information:**

In recent developments, Mexican authorities are intensifying their focus on improving police efficacy and accountability. As reported by various sources, there have been multiple steps taken to ensure that law enforcement officers adhere to the highest standards of conduct.

For example, municipal officers from various jurisdictions have been subjected to renewed scrutiny and mandatory reassessments at the Control and Trust Center (C3). This move aims to weed out any potential corrupt elements within the police force and ensure that officers are fully prepared to handle their responsibilities. The increased emphasis on police transparency and effectiveness is seen as crucial for maintaining public trust and safety.

Moreover, there have been ongoing efforts to strategically deploy both state and federal resources to hotspots identified as being particularly prone to violent incidents and organized crime. This proactive approach aims to swiftly quell any emerging threats and maintain peace in volatile regions.

By continuing to strengthen the cooperation between state and federal forces and employing rigorous reassessment processes for local law enforcement, Mexican authorities hope to enhance overall security and restore public confidence.
