**Mexicali Municipal Police Sidelined During Independence Day Celebrations**

During the recent Independence Day celebrations in Mexicali, the Baja California Citizen Security Secretariat (SSCBC) relegated the role of the Municipal Public Security Directorate (DSPM).

On September 10, Leopoldo Tizoc Aguilar Durán, the head of SSCBC, announced that 156 DSPM officers assigned to the Mexicali valley were reassigned to C3. Consequently, during the celebratory events on September 15, SSCBC took over primary security duties in Mexicali city and its valley, with assistance from the State Defense Secretariat (SEDENA).

In total, 234 elements from the State Citizen Security Force (FESC) were deployed across the city and valley. The key event in the Centro Cívico, where Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda performed the traditional “Grito de Independencia,” required significant security measures including closing key roads such as Calzadas Independencia and De los Héroes.

Following the “Grito,” Governor Ávila greeted attendees from a newly constructed balcony and enjoyed a drone light show with her family. The government also featured a musical performance by Los Ángeles Azules and Cristian Castro on one of the two stages set up for the festivities.

Throughout the celebration, FESC was responsible for securing all access points and the general perimeter. The DSPM’s involvement was limited to overseeing access for artists and officials, with just 30 traffic officers and 20 patrol cars assigned.

Meanwhile, in Guadalupe Victoria in the Mexicali valley, FESC personnel coordinated security operations with SEDENA without any intervention from the Municipal Police.

Amid growing concerns over security during major public events, the government of Mexicali announced increased measures and reallocation of security forces. This move comes after the SSCBC took primary control of security operations during the Independence Day celebrations.

With the reassignment of DSPM officers, the government aims to utilize specialized forces like FESC and SEDENA to ensure a higher level of security. Authorities have expressed that this strategy will be employed in future large-scale events to prevent any incidents and ensure public safety.

Recent reports highlighted that Mexicali experienced a significant decrease in security incidents during these celebrations compared to previous years. This improvement was attributed to the intensified security protocols and the strategic deployment of specialized forces.

Moving forward, the municipal government plans to continuously assess and adapt security measures for upcoming events, particularly those that draw large crowds. This proactive approach aims to maintain order and provide a safe environment for all attendees.
