**Rising Tensions in Mexicali: Threats Against Police Chief Amid Unidentified Body Discovery**
A series of threatening banners targeting the newly appointed head of the Mexicali Municipal Police, Julián Leyzaola Pérez, have raised alarms in the city. Early on the morning of March 21, a fourth threatening banner was discovered near the Choropo community along the Mexicali-San Felipe highway.
In a grim addition to these threats, the body of an unidentified man was found at the third level of the Mexicali Road Distributor, near the intersection of López Mateos and Lázaro Cárdenas boulevards. The body had multiple gunshot wounds and was accompanied by a threatening message directed at Leyzaola Pérez. The banner was signed by “El Ruso,” “Poncho de la Lima,” and “Palomo,” individuals believed to be associated with the criminal group known as “Los Rusos.”
Following the discovery of the body, two more banners were located: one hanging from a pedestrian bridge in the Zaragoza neighborhood along the Mexicali-Tijuana highway, and another at the underpass of Terán Terán and the San Felipe highway. A fourth banner was later discovered in the Choropo area, mirroring the threats found earlier.
Mexicali’s mayor, Norma Alicia Bustamante, highlighted that such threats are not unprecedented in the city, reflecting ongoing violent tensions linked to organized crime.
