The International Film Festival of Los Cabos (FIC Los Cabos) is returning with a fresh perspective, aiming to make significant contributions to the national film industry with discussions about its immediate future. Scheduled from November 4 to 8 in San José del Cabo, this year’s festival offers a transformed program celebrating Mexican narratives, strengthened community bonds, and the embrace of nature and cinematic creativity.

After a hiatus in 2023, the festival comes back with enhanced multisensory experiences, set against the idyllic backdrop of the southern tip of the California peninsula. The festival opens with the Latin American premiere of “Better Man,” a biographical docudrama about British pop icon Robbie Williams, and features the Cannes-acclaimed “Lomonov: The Ballad of Eddie,” which captures the life of poet and novelist Edouard Limonov. Closing the event is “María,” directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie, depicting the life of famed 20th-century opera singer María Callas.

Artistic Director Maru Garzón highlights the festival’s immersive experience: “The celebration of cinema returns by broadening its embrace across sites that heighten the senses through nature and art.” Venues such as Crania, the Puerto Los Cabos Sculpture Garden, Hotel El Ganso, Veleros Beach Club, and the iconic Plaza Mijares will host events, blending the beauty of endemic nature with music, thereby celebrating the renewed vision of the festival.

Through the program “Mexican Frames,” FIC Los Cabos aims to elevate the national film sector. Eleven feature films represent the year’s most significant Mexican productions and international co-productions, showcasing the universal reach of Mexican stories.

The “Mexican Frames” film selection includes:
– “Animal / Humano” by Alessandro Pugno
– “Corina” by Urzula Barba Hopfner
– “El Jockey” by Luis Ortega
– “El ladrón de perros” by Vinko Tomić
– “No nos moverán” by Pierre Saint-Martin
– “La Raya” by Yolanda Cruz
– “Sujo” by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez (Mexico’s submission for the 2025 Goya and Oscar awards)
– “Tesis sobre una domesticación” by Javier Van De Couter featuring Alfonso Herrera
– “Un cuento de pescadores” by Edgar Nito
– “Una historia de amor y guerra” by Santiago Mohar
– “Nómadas de la 57” by Alberto Arnaut and José Castro.

In addition to film screenings, discussions titled “Mexico: Cinema Without Borders” and “From the Cinema to the Pocket: Audiences, Screens, and Accessibility in the Digital Age” will address the strengths and challenges faced by the film industry today. These panels will explore how co-productions enrich storytelling and how digital platforms impact audience habits.

Underlining its commitment to nurturing emerging filmmakers, FIC Los Cabos, through the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, will grant approximately 1.9 million pesos to six selected projects. The festival will also offer a Baja California filmmakers’ workshop, “Independent Film Production: From Script to Screen”, led by producer Eréndira Núñez, to enhance the skills of local creators with renowned mentors like Nicolás Celis and Lila Avilés.

Finally, the traveling film showcase “La Baja Inspira Itinerante” will feature projects created in the peninsula, with screenings in Cabo San Lucas, Ciudad Insurgentes, El Triunfo, Guerrero Negro, La Paz, Loreto, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos, Tijuana, and Mexicali.
